The Widal test is a blood test that provides evidence for the diagnosis of typhoid fever (or paratyphoid fever) caused by infection with the Salmonella bacteria. Your body produces antibodies to combat these bacteria. The Widal test, used alongside other tests, can help assess symptomatic patients (the patient presenting with prolonged fever, abdominal pain, headache). Early detection will support your diagnosis and treatment as the longer you have symptoms, the more difficult it can be to properly follow typhoid.
Process
- A blood sample will be taken from a vein in your arm.
- Your blood will be separated into the serum (liquid).
- The serum is mixed with Salmonella proteins, and the mixture is observed for clumping, which would indicate the presence of antibodies against Salmonella.
When to Get This Test
Testing should be seriously considered if you have had any long-lasting fever, stomach pain, or if you have ingested contaminated foods or been exposed to contaminated sources (like water) especially abroad where typhoid is endemic.
Sample Requirements
Approximately 2ml blood samples will be required from your vein for this test.
Test Preparation
There is no special preparation or fasting prior to this test. There are no restrictions on eating or drinking prior to testing.
Understanding Your Results
A positive Widal test result would indicate that you have antibodies to Salmonella in your blood suggesting there is an infection. Your doctor will likely have a repeat test or even another test to confirm results and design a treatment plan for you.
