The VDRL (Venereal Disease Research Laboratory) and RPR (Rapid Plasma Reagin) tests are simple blood tests used to screen for the sexually transmitted infection syphilis. These tests do not detect the bacteria but instead identify antibodies produced by the body against the infection. It is important to detect syphilis early as it is easily treated before it leads to complications with your health. These tests are inexpensive, easy and are used in regular check-ups or ailments as well as STI screenings.
Process
- A nurse or technician will take a small blood sample from a vein.
- Then the sample will be combined with a special solution in the lab.
- If the solutions/or blood clumps form, it may mean one has a syphilis infection.
When to Get Tested
You should consider testing if you have any signs of a STI or you are pregnant, have had sex with someone who has tested positive for syphilis or have had unprotected sex or if you are being treated for syphilis -- this process is called monitoring treatment effectiveness.
