The glucose testing in urine is a simple, painless test that checks for sugar in one’s urine (glucose). Normally, kidneys prevent glucose from entering the urine, but when there is high blood sugar (often due to diabetes), it can result in glucose appearing in one’s urine (known as glycosuria). This test is used to screen for or monitor diabetes, determine kidney function, and occasionally identify rare conditions (e.g., renal glycosuria). It is an easy way to help identify potential issues and need for further tests and treatment.
Process
- The technician will provide a clean, midstream urine sample into a sterile container.
- A test strip (or dipstick) will be dipped into the urine and a color will develop on the strip based on the glucose level and results will be compared to a color chart.
When to Get Tested
This test may be ordered if you have symptoms associated with high blood sugar (e.g., urge to urinate frequently, high thirst), or if you are being monitored for diabetes or kidney problems.

Test Preparation
