The Urine for Eosinophils Test detects eosinophils, a type of white blood cells that are not usually found in urine. Eosinophils can indicate inflammation in the kidney, usually caused by an allergic reaction to medication or an infection. The test helps doctors diagnose acute interstitial nephritis and other kidney problems when patient's signs and symptoms are unclear or other kidney function tests are inconclusive.
Process
- The patient will submit a clean-catch midstream urine sample into a sterile container.
- The laboratory will centrifuge the sample to concentrate the cells from the urine sample and prepare the slides with stain.
- An laboratory technician will examine the slide under a microscope to determine the number of eosinophils present.
When to Get Tested
Testing should be used when you have unexplained kidney problems, urinary symptoms, when there is suspicion of kidney inflammation caused by medication or suspected infection.
