URINE EXAMINATION ROUTINE; URINE R/E

The Urine Examination Routine test is a straightforward, quick, and painless test. This test examines the physical, chemical, and microscopic properties of urine. A urine exam can detect and monitor a range of health problems, like urinary tract infections, kidney disease, diabetes, and more. The urine sample provides doctors with information to help determine potential problems that can cause the following symptoms: pain during urination, blood in urine, and increased frequency of urination and to manage ongoing treatment.

Process

• The technician will collect a specimen using a clean-catch midstream urine sample in a sterile container after washing the genital area.
• Next, your doctor will perform a visual examination for the color, clarity, and odors associated with the urine.
• The nurse or doctor will dip the test strips into the urine to determine the chemicals (e.g. protein, glucose, blood) in the urine, and then the urine sediment will be assessed microscopically for cells and crystals.

When to Get Tested

If you have any new urinary or reproductive symptoms that you want to investigate at your doctor’s office, or if you are being treated or monitored for kidney, metabolic, or reproductive conditions, you should consider this testing. 

Sample Requirements

You will need to provide a clean-catch midstream urine sample for testing.

Test Preparation

In general, there is no special test preparation. It is generally a good idea to refrain from eating particular foods or taking prescription or over-the-counter medications that may change the color of your urine before having your sample tested. 

Result Interpretation

If your urine exam is abnormal, it may indicate infection, or a problem with your kidney's health, or suggest diabetes. Abnormal results typically lead to follow-up tests and treatment by your healthcare provider.
