The Urea Random Urine Test determines the amount of urea nitrogen which is a waste product of the breakdown of protein in a single urine sample. It helps measure kidney activity, protein metabolism, and to a lesser extent, liver activity. This simple, non-invasive test gives valuable insight on how well one’s kidneys are able to excrete waste, and how effectively one’s body is able to metabolize protein. It is especially useful for those suspected of having kidney or liver problems, or are receiving treatment for illnesses involving these organs.
Process
- A random urine sample is taken at any time.
- The patient will urinate into a clean, sterile, leak-proof container.
- The sample will be sent to the laboratory with no preservatives.
When to Get Tested
The urine urea test can be done if you have signs of liver or kidney dysfunction, are critically ill, malnourished, or have abnormal levels of blood urea nitrogen (BUN), or could be a way of monitoring treatments for kidney or liver diseases.
