Urea Fluid Testing is a test that measures urea nitrogen levels in body fluids, including pleural fluid, ascitic fluid, cerebrospinal fluid, and pericardial fluid. It is used to help understand the reason for the abnormal build-up and pooling of fluid. It is important not only for diagnosing potential kidney or liver problems, but also for determining the efficacy of treatment (e.g., dialysis) for those problems. It helps diagnose the cause of the fluid, which further helps to determine the treatment.
Process
- A lab technician collects fluid from the targeted site of abnormal fluid build-up, whether the chest, abdomen, lumbar spine, or pericardial.
- A sterile needle is used and the fluid is placed into a sterile container.
- The provider then sends the uncooled fluid sample directly to the laboratory as soon as possible.
When to Get Tested
It is appropriate to test the fluid in cases of unexplained body fluid accumulation, or when investigations towards potential kidney or liver problems or infection are being worked up. Urea fluid will also work to monitor patients undergoing dialysis treatment.
