The Urea 24-Hour Urine Test quantifies the amount of urea, a waste product of protein metabolism, found in a person's urine over 24 hours. The test is usually used to evaluate kidney function, protein metabolism, and nutritional status. Results are important when assessing kidney or liver disease and care of a patient who is seriously ill or malnourished.
Process
- A lab technician will suggest you collect the urine. However, you will not collect the first urine of the day, and you should record the time you wake up.
- After that, you will collect all urine over 24 hours in a special container.
- Use a collecting container in an ice bath or store in the refrigerator during collection.
When To Get Tested
You'll need to take this test if your doctor has assessed you for kidney dysfunction, abnormal protein metabolism, or if you are receiving monitoring for malnourishment or a severe illness where monitoring diet is necessary.
Sample Type
You must provide a full 24-hour urine sample collected in a sterile container.
Test Preparation
You don't need to fast. You should continue with your regular foods and fluids unless your doctor has instructed you otherwise.
Understanding Your Results
Normal urea levels are 12–20 grams/day. Excessive levels may indicate either excess protein or possible dehydration, and low urea levels may indicate possible malnutrition or liver/kidney issues. Your physician will interpret your results in conjunction with other tests, and determine if any follow-ups are needed.
