The TSH Ultrasensitive test is a blood test that measures low levels of the thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). This is significant because it is able to identify problems with the thyroid (hypothyroidism (too little thyroid) / hyperthyroidism (too much thyroid)), even while the condition is still in its early stages. The TSH Ultrasensitive test helps to speed up the diagnosis and provide better options for treatment to treat potential thyroid-related issues and to regulate the levels of metabolism / energy levels.
Process
- A healthcare provider will take a small blood sample from the arm.
- The blood sample is then sent to the lab and plugged into a machine that uses advanced technology to measure a person’s TSH levels.
When to Get Tested
You may want to be tested when experiencing any of the following: fatigue, weight gain/loss, mood changes, irregular heartbeats, changes in tolerability for heat / cold temperatures etc.
Sample Requirements
We will need a small blood sample that is pulled from your vein, usually in the arm for testing.
Test Preparation
You do not need to fast prior to the TSH Ultrasensitive test. Please avoid biotin supplements for at least 2 days before testing because biotin can interfere with the test results.
Understanding Your Results
If your TSH is examined, the typical reference range is between 0.4 and 4.0 mIU/L. Higher levels would indicate you are hypothyroid and much too low could indicate you are hyperthyroid. Your doctor may follow up with abnormalities with free T3 and T4. In certain scenarios, additional tests could be warranted but further discussions are required.
