TLC test counts all the white blood cells (leukocytes) in your blood which help fight infections in your body. It is a basic test considered essential in the diagnosis of infection, inflammation and autoimmune disorders, as well as help with your healthcare provider following your recovery from treatment (e.g. chemotherapy). TLC test is part of routine blood work to look at the functioning level of parts of your immune system.
Process
- The healthcare professional cleans the area on your arm and obtains a sample of your blood from a vein in your arm.
- Sample collected in a tube with an anticoagulant.
- The blood is examined in the laboratory. Depending on the laboratory or clinic the process of analysis may be in a manual or automated system.
When to Get Tested
A TLC test may be required if you have fever, fatigue, or signs of infection/inflammation. It is also required before or during any treatment (e.g. chemotherapy), and part of routine health care.
Sample Requirements
A small sample of blood is taken from the veins in an EDTA tube.
Test preparation
No fasting prior to the test. Do not drink alcohol, smoke or partake in strenuous physical activity for 24 hours before the TLC test.
Understanding Your Results
If you are outside of the normal range (4,000–11,000 cell/µL), this could indicate an infection, immune disorders, or the effects of any treatments. Your doctor may suggest further tests or further treatments depending on your results.
