A T4 Free & TSH Ultrasensitive test is also a blood test that evaluates the function of your thyroid gland. This test measures: free T4 (the hormone that regulates your body's energy and metabolism) and TSH (the thyroid-stimulating hormone that tells your thyroid how much hormone to make). Abnormal values for T4 and TSH can indicate hypothyroidism (low thyroid function) and hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid). The T4 and TSH assay are important tests for timely identification and treatment of thyroid disorders.
Process
- A health professional will disinfect your arm and apply a tourniquet.
- A small needle is inserted into a vein and blood is drawn (venipuncture).
- Blood is collected into a test tube and then sent to the laboratory.
When to Be Tested
You should consider this test if you have symptoms of fatigue or changes in weight, or you have abnormal sensitivity to temperature, or you want to test your thyroid health during pregnancy, or treatment.

The test requires a small sample of blood drawn from a vein.
Test Preparation

Understanding Your Results
In normal results the ratio of hormones is balanced. High TSH and low Free T4 show an underactive thyroid while low TSH and high Free T4 show an overactive thyroid. Abnormal results are subject to further testing or possibly change in treatment.
