FT3 and FT4 testing measures the free hormones in the blood called Free T3 (triiodothyronine) and Free T4 (thyroxine). These hormones are important to metabolism, energy levels, growth, and various aspects of mood. This test detects thyroid disorder, to monitor thyroid treatment and/or investigate symptoms such as fatigue, body weight changes and/or abnormal or irregular heart rhythm.
Process
- A health professional will take a small blood sample from a vein in one’s arm.
- The blood sample will be sent to a laboratory where the tests will be done using special immunoassay techniques using a blood sample minimum as small as 20 microliters.
When to get tested
You may want to do the test if you have symptoms of thyroid imbalance such as fatigue, unexplained changes in body weight, and/or mood swings. It is also a good idea to do this test during pregnancy.

Test Preparation
Fasting is not required nor are any restrictions placed on eating. Let the doctor know of all medications including biotin supplements that you are taking during the time of the test.
