The Free T3 (FT3) test detects the amount of active triiodothyronine hormone (T3) present in your blood. T3 is a hormone that is critical to the regulation of the body’s metabolism, heart rate, digestion, and energy levels. The FT3 test is significant for assessing thyroid gland function, diagnosing thyroid conditions such as hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, as well as tracking treatment for ongoing thyroid therapy.
Process
- Blood will be drawn from a vein in your arm.
- The blood sample will be sent to the lab for analysis using immunoassay techniques.
When to get tested
If you are experiencing signs such as fatigue, weight gain or loss, tremors, anxiety, or irregular heartbeats, the FT3 test is recommended. It is also recommended if you are diagnosed with thyroid trouble, are over 40 years of age, or may have a family history of thyroid problems.
Sample Type
A blood sample (serum) is required for the test.
Test Preparation
Fasting is not required. However, please inform your physician of all medications, including biotin as it shall be stopped at least two days prior to testing.
Understanding Your Results
Your doctor will compare your test results against the normal T3 ranges. High values may mean hyperthyroidism and low values may mean hypothyroidism. The results are compared alongside additional thyroid tests for diagnosis and treatment planning.
