The Stool Exam, pH & Reducing substances test is a simple diagnostic stool test used to determine the absorption of carbohydrates into your body and explore gut health. In this test, we measure sugars that have not been absorbed properly through digestion (reduction) and measure acidity (ph) of the stool. It helps identify conditions like lactose intolerance and malabsorption.
Process
- A fresh stool sample is collected for testing, and pH levels are measured using pH test strips. Chemical tests will identify reducing sugars in the stool.
- The tests are easy, painless, and non-invasive with results out on the same day.
When to get tested
If one is experiencing very loose stools often, frequent diarrhea, abdominal pain, or suspect being lactose intolerant.
Sample Type
A clean, sealed container of fresh stool samples (3-5 grams) promptly delivered to the lab.
Test Preparation
No fasting needed, but one may need to avoid vitamin C, some antibiotics, and other medications as the doctor advises before the test.
Understanding Your Results
Normal results mean good absorption of carbohydrates. Positive results mean that unabsorbed sugars are present and low stool pH, therefore malabsorption or enzyme deficiency may be present which may need further testing and/or treatment.
