STOOL EXAMINATION, OCCULT BLOOD

The stool occult blood test (FOBT) is a non-invasive procedure used to detect blood in stool that cannot be seen with the naked eye. This test is important for detecting early potential signs of colorectal cancer and other gastrointestinal conditions that can cause bleeding. Recognizing blood sooner leads to treatment and better health.

Process

• Collect small samples of stool from three separate bowel movements onto a special test card.
• The sample interacts with a chemical process to reveal the hidden blood in the stool, using either guaiac or immunochemical methods.
• The test is easy to conduct in your own home, is painless, and the results are typically available the same day.

When to get tested 

If one is an adult over 50, or has symptoms (even for a short time) of unexplained anemia, abdominal pain, or changes in the  bowel routine, they should consider being tested. If they are at a higher risk for colorectal cancer, this test will be recommended to them.

Sample Type

A small stool sample on a specific test card from three separate bowel movements is required.

Test Preparation

For 2-3 days before one takes their stool samples on the cards (and while they are collecting stool samples), avoid eating certain foods that can interfere with the test causing false positive results: red meat, some raw vegetables, vitamin C supplements, and medications one is taking, particularly non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs). Follow the instructions provided in the test kit carefully.

Understanding Your Results

A negative result means no hidden blood, but does not entirely rule out problems. A positive result indicates blood is present and further evaluation (e.g. colonoscopy) is needed to determine the cause and guide treatment.
