The Sputum for Eosinophil Test is a test to assess the amount of eosinophils (a type of white blood cell) present in the mucus one coughs from their lungs. It helps doctors check for inflammation in airways, especially in conditions like eosinophilic asthma and other allergic lung problems. This test is important because it helps confirm diagnosis, monitor how well treatment is working, and guide medication adjustments to better control symptoms and improve breathing.
Process
- You inhaled a saline mist that will help loosen and produce sputum from your lung.
- You cough up the sputum and it’s collected in a sterile container.
- They will analyze the sample in the lab under the microscope for eosinophils.
When to get tested
People with asthma, chronic cough, wheeze or breathing problems may be referred for sputum for eosinophil test, especially when symptoms are not resolving with treatment or to assess allergic airway inflammation.

Test Preparation
Your doctor may ask you to not use inhalers or other medications in preparation for testing but fasting is not necessary.
Understanding Your Results
Eosinophils above 3% indicate airway inflammation consistent with eosinophilic asthma. Normal eosinophil counts are lower. If eosinophil counts are elevated, you may need to make changes to your therapy while declining eosinophils suggest the treatment is effective.
