The Sputum Routine Test is a simple and practical diagnostic procedure that investigates mucus (called a sputum) that is coughed out of the lungs. This test detects infection, inflammation, or abnormal cells involving the lungs or respiratory airways. It is important for diagnosing pneumonia, tuberculosis, and bronchitis, as well as chronic lung diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Process
- You will be instructed to cough deeply so you can obtain mucus into a sterile container.
- The specimen is examined directly under a microscope to look for organisms causing infection or abnormal cells.
- It may also be cultured, which can determine specific bacteria or fungi, and which antibiotic(s) work best.
When to get tested
The test is useful for people with a cough that does not go away, if there is chest pain, fever, difficulty breathing, or if there is suspected lung infection. If you are being treated for lung conditions, you can use this test to monitor your progress.
Sample Type
A fresh sputum specimen is needed. Ideally, you should collect the specimen in the morning.
Test Preparation
You do not need to fast before your test. Please drink plenty for fluids the night before and rinse your mouth before the sample is given.
Understanding Your Results
A normal result indicates no infection. If there are harmful organisms or abnormal cells in the sample, your doctor may give you some medication or may suggest tests to confirm a diagnosis or modify treatment.
