The SGPT Test, clinically referred to as the ALT (Alanine Aminotransferase) test, is a blood test that is performed to assess liver health. It measures the level of SGPT enzyme in the blood, which is typically found in liver cells. When there is damage or inflammation in the liver, SGPT leaks into the bloodstream. This means that results may be abnormal in a variety of liver diseases (with the inclusion of hepatitis, fatty liver, cirrhosis, etc.).
Process
- The lab technician will clean your skin and use a needle to draw blood from a vein in your arm.
- You will usually be asked to wear a tourniquet to fill a tube with your blood. They will place your blood into a tube and take it to a lab.
- The sample collection is fairly quick and only causes little discomfort.
When to Get Tested
You may be suggested if you have symptoms such as jaundice, abdominal pain, or fatigue, and/or risk factors such as alcohol use, family history of liver disease, or obesity.

No special preparation is usually needed. Inform your doctor about any medications or supplements you are taking.
Understanding Your Results
Normal SGPT levels range from 7 - 56 U/L. This test alone cannot diagnose any conditions, but a higher level signals possible liver damage or inflammation and should not be interpreted alone. Always consider any liver test or condition with other tests, signs and symptoms for proper diagnosis and continuing care.
