The SGOT test (AST) measures the SGOT enzyme in the blood. The level of the SGOT enzyme in blood is useful for the provider to see how well your liver is functioning and to be able to identify other organ damage like heart damage or muscle damage. This test is a very common part of diagnosing liver diseases like fatty liver or hepatitis and is also used in monitoring treatment of these diseases. It's a simple blood test that can provide a lot of information about your general health.
Process
- A health care provider cleans your arm and then draws blood from a vein.
- The sample is sent off to the lab for testing.
- The lab will measure the AST levels. They are often reported as a part of a panel test as with other liver function tests.
When to Get Tested
If you experience symptoms like fatigue, jaundice or abdominal pain, you should get tested. You should also get an AST test if you are at risk of liver disease from alcohol intake, diabetes, or obesity, or if you have a family history of liver disease.
