The SAAG test allows doctors to narrow down the reasons for the presence of fluid buildup in the abdomen (ascites). The test compares the levels of albumin protein in your blood and in fluid that is taken from your abdomen. It is important because it can be used to help characterize serious problems such as liver disease, heart failure, infections, or cancer so that doctors can make the right choices for your treatment.
Process
• A sample of blood is taken from a vein in your arm.
• A small amount of fluid is collected from your abdomen using a thin needle (called a paracentesis).
• The level of albumin in each is then compared to derive the SAAG.
When to Get Tested
If you have any symptoms such as abdominal swelling, pain, or unexplained weight gain, then you should discuss this test with your doctor. SAAG is also considered if liver disease, or other causes of fluid accumulation, are suspected.
Sample Type
The test requires a blood sample and ascitic fluid taken from the abdomen.
Test preparation
You may need to fast 8-9 hours for the blood sample. You should inform your doctor on any medications you are taking.
Understanding Your Results
A SAAG of 1.1 g/dL or greater typically indicates liver-related causes such as cirrhosis while measurements of less than 1.1 g/dL may indicate infections or cancer. Your doctor should talk to you about what the report means and what should happen next.
