The Scrub Typhus IgM EIA Test is a blood test administered to find antibodies which were produced in response to the Orientia tsutsugamushi, the germ that causes scrub typhus. Scrub typhus is an illness that occurs when a person is bitten by a mite. The symptoms from the bite can lead to a serious condition quickly if not treated. The Scrub Typhus IgM EIA Test can be used to diagnose the infection in the early stages, which allows the opportunity for timely treatment to be administered, as well as minimizing illness and preventing the possibility of serious illness.
Process
- Blood will be drawn from a small vein in the arm.
- The sample will be examined by a laboratory to check for IgM antibodies.
When to Get Tested
You are a candidate for testing if you have fever, rash, muscle aches, or an eschar (scab) and have had exposure in endemic areas and participation in activities where you came in contact with mites that transmit scrub typhus. This test may also be useful to help diagnosis if you have a fever with treatment not demonstrating improvement.

Test preparation
Fasting or special preparation is not needed to have the sample taken unless you are given other ins tructions from your physician.
Understanding Your Results
A positive IgM result indicates a recent infection and the possibility for treatment initiation. A negative result may indicate there is no infection or testing occurred too early before antibody detection. Based on your symptoms, your provider may guide you to repeated testing or another diagnostic test.
