The Rubella (German Measles) IgM Antibody Test is a simple blood test performed for the detection of recent or active rubella infection. The test detects IgM antibodies which occur not long after infection, and can help support or confirm a diagnosis of rubella when symptoms like rash and fever develop.
Process
- You will have a short blood sample taken from the vein in your arm.
- The blood sample is then sent to the lab for testing. ELISA or CLIA methods are commonly used procedures in the laboratory for this test.
When to Get Tested
Testing is recommended in the presence of rubella-like features of rash and fever, particularly during rubella outbreaks. Pregnant women with features of rubella infection or have been exposed to rubella infection should be tested for rubella to determine if there is any risk to the baby.
