The Reticulocyte Count Test checks reticulocytes (immature red blood cells) in your blood. It provides insight for physicians on how active your bone marrow is in producing red blood cells. It is useful in establishing and monitoring anemia, evaluating bone marrow function, and assessing recovery from blood loss or treatment-related circumstances (e.g. chemotherapy).
Process
- Blood is drawn from an arm vein.
- The blood sample is stained to cause the reticulocytes to stand out.
- The reticulocytes are then counted using a microscope or automated machine.
When to Get Tested
You may be asked to have this test if you have anemia, low hemoglobin, or if you are being treated for a blood condition. The test will give your physician useful information about your recovery following chemotherapy, bone marrow transplant, or blood loss.
