The Urine Reducing Substances Test is a simple, non-invasive test for detecting certain sugars in the urine such as galactose, fructose, and lactose. This test is useful for determining issues related to sugar metabolism, which can be especially beneficial in infants or children. With early detection of conditions such as galactosemia or fructose intolerance, treatments can be done quickly to alleviate dietary concerns and potential complications, such as liver injury and developmental delay.
Process
- A fresh urine sample is collected in a clean container.
- A chemical reagent is added (such as Benedict's solution) to the urine.
- The color change of the solution will indicate the presence of reducing sugars.
When to Get Tested
This test should be done on newborns or children that are experiencing symptoms such as poor feeding and vomiting, jaundice, and/or delayed development. It can also be helpful when the glucose test in the urine is normal, but the patient is showing signs and symptoms of an issue with sugar metabolism.
Sample Type
A clean, fresh urine sample of at least 5 mL (so about 2 teaspoons).
Test preparation
A fast is not usually necessary and this test does not require any special preparation, however, discuss any medications or supplements that are being used with your doctor.
Understanding Your Results
A negative result indicates no abnormal sugars detected; a positive test indicates further testing to identify specific sugars and aid diagnosis and treatment of galactosemia, diabetes, or fructose intolerance.
