The parathyroid hormone intact-test (PTH) is a blood test that measures the level of parathyroid hormone in your blood. Parathyroid hormone regulates calcium and phosphorus levels in your body. Calcium and phosphorus is essential for healthy bones, nerves and muscles in your body. The test is important when diagnosing parathyroid hormone disorders, overseeing the treatment for parathyroid hormone disorders or other related diseases (chronic kidney disease), especially if calcium is abnormal.
Process
- A small amount of blood is collected from a vein in your arm.
- The area is cleansed, and a needle is inserted to collect some blood.
- The blood sample is sent to a laboratory for analysis.
When to Get Tested
If you have high calcium, low calcium, or unexplained bone issues, your doctor may test you for PTH. PTH is also important in diagnosing parathyroid disorders and keeping track of patients who have undergone parathyroid surgery.

Test preparation
