The Prothrombin Time (PT) test is a simple blood test to see how quickly your body is able to clot blood. It allows the doctor to determine if you might develop either a bleeding problem or a risk of clotting or monitor blood-thinning (anticoagulation) medications such as warfarin. This test is important for those with liver problems, anticoagulation treatment, and anyone bleeding or bruising for no apparent reason.
Process
- A small blood sample is obtained from a vein in your arm.
- The blood sample is sent to the lab and the clotting time is assessed.
- The final result will be in seconds and/or INR (International Normalized Ratio).
When to Get Tested
Your doctor may order this test if you are taking blood thinners, have abnormal bleeding or bruising, have liver disease, or are having elective surgery. This test can also be useful when considering inherited or acquired bleeding or clotting disorders or vitamin K deficiency.
