The Urine Pregnancy Test (UPT) is a convenient way to determine whether you are pregnant, by detecting the hormone hCG in urine. hCG is produced shortly after a fertilized egg implants into the uterus lining. UPT is important because it can confirm pregnancy early, prompt necessary prenatal care, and help inform any plans/accommodations for health and medical treatment.
Process
- Collect urine in a clean container; we recommend the first morning sample.
- Either dip the testing strip into the urine sample or put drops of urine into the test kit window as required.
- Wait the required time, then read the result as instructed for the testing kit.
When to Get Tested
You should take a UPT if you have missed your period, or are experiencing physical symptoms associated with early pregnancy nausea or tiredness. Also if you need confirmation of pregnancy to establish whether you can start certain medical treatment or medication.
Sample Type
You will need a sample of urine, preferably the first sample of the day; however, any fresh sample would work.
Test preparation
No special preparations are required; follow the instructions closely, and check for the expiry date of the test.
Understanding Your Results
A positive test result, generally indicates pregnancy and this should be followed up with a doctor visit as soon as possible. A negative result may be no pregnancy or it could also be too early to test positive for pregnancy- repeat the test in a few days, or check with your health care provider, to clarify.
