The 24-Hour Urine Potassium Test determines the total amount of potassium your body excretes in urine over a full day. This test is used by doctors to assess potassium balance, kidney function as well as to evaluate conditions causing abnormal potassium status. Having the proper potassium balance is critical in cases of muscle weakness, irregular heartbeat, or disorder of the kidneys or adrenal glands; and for monitoring the effects of certain medications on potassium levels.
Process
- You should collect all of the urine produced in a 24-hour period and store it in a special container.
- The collection will start after you discard the first urine of the day, but you should include the first urine void of the following day.
- Store the container in the fridge or another cool location during the period of collecting your urine.
When to Get Tested
The test is typically advised if you have symptoms that suggest you might have a potassium imbalance, you have abnormal potassium blood levels, have disease of the kidney or adrenal glands or are taking medications that might affect potassium balance.
