The CA-125 test is a simple blood test measuring the level of a protein called CA-125 in the blood. CA-125 protein may be in higher amounts in certain types of cancer, particularly ovarian cancer, but it is not a general screening test. The CA-125 test is primarily used to diagnose ovarian cancer, monitor treatment for ovarian cancer, and detect recurrence in patients suspected to have cancer.
Process
- A small blood sample is collected from a blood vessel (vein) in the arm.
- After the blood is sampled, the blood sample is sent to a laboratory and tested to determine the amount of CA-125 protein present.
- Results are usually expressed in units per milliliter (U/mL).
When to get tested
You may need this test if you have pelvic pain or bloating, a known pelvic mass, or being monitored for or have history of ovarian cancer.

Test Preparation
Fasting is unnecessary but please refrain from ingesting biotin supplements for 12 hours before the test. Inform your doctor regarding any medications you are on.
Understanding Your Results
Normal CA-125 levels are usually below 35 U/mL. There are many causes of high levels, including cancer or benign conditions. In addition to the CA-125 test, you will likely need additional imaging (CT, PET scan, etc.) or potentially a biopsy before a cause can be confirmed and treatment planned.
