The Microalbumin, 1st Morning Urine Test is a laboratory test that checks for small amounts of the protein albumin in your urine. This test uses the first urine sample of the day when urine is more concentrated. This is an important test, as it looks for early signs of kidney damage, particularly in patients with diabetes, high blood pressure, and other chronic medical conditions.
Process
- Collect the first urination of the day, preferably as soon as you get out of bed.
- Use the clean-catch midstream method to collect the sample in a sterile container.
- Submit the sample to the laboratory based on the instructions of your healthcare provider.
When to Get Tested
Those with diabetes (type 1 or 2), high blood pressure, or a family history of kidney disease should consider having this test completed at least yearly. In addition, many physicians recommend testing patients after previous testing has shown possible kidney issues.
Sample Type
One urination sample is taken, early in the morning.
Test Preparation
No fasting is required. Do not participate in strenuous exercise, nor should you have a urinary tract infection(s) before your test, as this may result in abnormal test results.
Understanding Your Results
An albumin-creatinine ratio (ACR) less than 30 mg/g is considered normal. An ACR of 30-300 mg/g indicates early damage to the kidney, while repeated ACRs over the limits may also indicate that further investigations or treatment may be needed to protect your kidneys.
