The Mantoux Tuberculin Skin Test is a method to determine if you have been infected with the bacteria that cause tuberculosis (TB). It is effective in early detection of both active and latent TB infections, particularly in people who are at greater risk (e.g. individuals with compromised immune systems or have been in close contact with a person who has TB). Process
- An injection is used where a very small amount (0.1 ml) of tuberculin (PPD) just under the skin of your forearm.
- A small raised bump will form almost immediately after the injection.
- The nurse will check the test site 48–72 hours later to assess how the skin reacted to the testing material.
When to Get Tested
The test will be offered if you have symptoms of TB, if you have been exposed to someone with active TB or are a part of a high-risk group (e.g. health care workers; immunocompromised individuals; individuals from countries where TB is common).
Sample Type
Drainage of blood is not involved as the test requires a very small injection into the skin of your forearm
Test Preparation
There is no special preparation or fasting required. Notify the doctor if you have had a BCG vaccine or have taken any immune previous interventions.
Understanding Your Result
Your result is based on the size of the raised area on your skin. A positive result may mean that you have been exposed to TB and indicated that further tests may be necessary (such as a chest X-ray) to determine if you now have an active infection.
