This is a simple blood test for the diagnosis of malaria from Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum. It detects specific proteins (called antigens) released into the blood by the malaria-causing parasites in a person who is infected with malaria. A rapid malaria antigen test can provide a quick result and allow for the timely initiation of treatment. The test is most useful for patients who have recently traveled to a malaria endemic region in the world.
Process
- A blood sample will be obtained, either by a finger prick or from your vein.
- This blood sample will be injected into a rapid diagnostic test (RDT) device.
- Results will begin to appear within 15–30 minutes and consist of lines that indicate the malaria infection type.
When to Get Tested
You should have a test if you have fever, chills, headache, or sweating—even if you have only visited a malaria endemic region. Tests may also be used in high-risk areas as diagnostic screening tests.

Understanding Your Result
A positive result means infection with either P. vivax or P. falciparum. A negative result means there is no detectable malaria, but this does not mean malaria is ruled out especially if you have symptoms. A negative result does not defer the possibility of early-stage infection and further tests may occur.
