The Malaria Parasite (MP) Test, also called Blood Parasite Identification, is a lab test that detects parasites (Plasmodium species) that cause malaria in the blood. The MP test confirms malaria and establishes the parasite type (P. falciparum, P. vivax, etc.) as well as the extent of the infection (parasite load).
Process
- A small amount of blood is collected either by a finger prick or a vein draw.
- Thick and thin blood smears are prepared, stained, and analyzed under a microscope.
- Once the parasites are identified, they are classified and counted.
When to Get Tested
Testing is recommended if you experience symptoms such as fever, chills, or fatigue, particularly if you have traveled or resided in areas where malaria is endemic. The Malaria Parasite (MP) Test is also used to evaluate treatment response.
