The Macrocytic Anemia Panel Test is to test for anemia caused by red blood cells that are larger than you would expect. Larger cells can be caused by low levels of either vitamin B12 or folate. It will help the health care provider determine if you have any symptoms such as tiredness or weakness. The test is used to determine the cause of the symptoms, and if necessary, how to treat the patient to restore proper blood or nerve health.
Process
- A technician will obtain a blood sample from your vein. This is typically done in the arm.
- The blood sample will be assessed for both vitamin B12 and folate, as well as examination of the red blood cells themselves.
- There may be more tests that will assess the size and shape of blood cells to further evaluate the patient.
When to Get Tested
If you have symptoms such as tiredness, weakness, pale skin, or numbness, or if routine blood tests labeled your cells as large or indicating anemia, you will want to have this test done. You will also want to keep up with levels of vitamin to provide monitoring of your vitamin treatment.

Test Preparation
