- A health care professional obtains a small blood sample from a vein in your arm.

When to Get Tested
You may want to obtain the test at the time of a routine health examination. Sample Type
The sample will take approximately 3–5 mL of blood from your arm vein.
Test Preparation
It is generally recommended to fast for 9 to 12 hours prior to the test, this can help to ensure accurate testing results, particularly triglycerides. Avoid alcohol for 24 to 48 hours prior to testing.
Understanding Your Result
Higher levels of “bad” cholesterol (LDL) or triglycerides will increase your risk of heart disease. A higher level of your “good” cholesterol (HDL) provides a level of protection. Your doctor will factor this with other considerations of your health to determine whether treatment after lab testing is required or any lifestyle changes may be warranted.
