This blood test for IgG antibodies detects evidence of current or recent exposure to Leptospira bacteria, the agents responsible for causing a disease called leptospirosis. This test is useful to help identify past possible exposures to leptospira infection when contaminated water, soil, or animals have been in contact with and can be useful for supporting treatment for suspected leptospirosis when the infection may not be confirmed and/or if treatment is required quickly.
Process
- Blood is taken from the vein for testing.
- The sample is taken to the laboratory for antibody testing through methods such as an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay) card test.
When to get tested
Get this test if you have been in contact with contaminated water, soil, or animals, and/or if you are also showing signs of an active infection such as fever, muscle aches, and/or jaundice. Getting it done is also useful for when leptospirosis is suspected but not confirmed.
