A Kidney Function Test (KFT) is this type of blood and urine tests that assess the functioning of one’s kidneys. The KFT can measure waste products such as creatinine and urea, and determine the function of the kidneys in filtering and maintaining fluid balance. KFT is an important test because it is helpful in finding kidney disease during its earliest stages, shows kidney disease signs or an ongoing state like diabetes or high blood pressure.
Process
- A blood sample will be taken from one’s arm vein.
- A urine sample, which sometimes involves collecting the urine sample over 24 hours can be collected for a urine test as well.
- The pairs of samples will be used to measure waste products, electrolytes, and filtration levels.
When to Get tested
A KFT will be recommended if you present with symptoms including swelling, changes in urination habits, fatigue or hypertension (high blood pressure). Also, individuals with diabetes or hypertension, or who have family members with kidney problems may be recommended for KFT.

Understanding Your Results
The test report lists levels of substances in the urine like creatinine, BUN levels, and GFR. If you see high creatinine and/or low GFR, this indicates kidney issues that may require further investigation or monitoring by your doctor to manage kidney health.
