The Kidney Panel Extended Exam is a series of blood and urine tests that assess how well one’s kidneys are functioning. It looks at how well kidneys filter waste out of the blood, how well they handle minerals in the blood, and how well they maintain body fluids. This testing is significant for identifying early signs of kidney problems, monitoring chronic problems, and for keeping track of kidney function while using medications that might affect kidney function.
Process
- You will provide a blood sample from a vein.
- You will provide a clean-catch midstream urine sample.
- Both samples will be tested for a number of kidney parameters such as creatinine, urea, and electrolytes.
When to Get tested
If you have symptoms such as swelling, fatigue, or changes in urination, have diabetes, high blood pressure, or obesity, or a family history of kidney disease you should be tested.
Sample Type
Fasting blood samples and midstream urine samples are usually required.
Test Preparation
Fasting period before the test may be required, from 8–10 hours. It is advisable to refrain from strenuous exercises and make sure to inform your doctor about what medications you are taking.
Understanding Your Results
Results will indicate your kidney function, based on values such as creatinine, BUN, and eGFR. If any value comes back abnormal, it may indicate some damage to the kidneys or some kind of imbalance. You may need to change your lifestyle, follow-up with more tests, and/or consult your health care provider for some kind of treatment for the condition.
