The Iron Studies Monitoring Panel Test is a blood test that is used to assess the amount of iron in the body, where it is being transported, and how much is stored. The test is useful to help diagnose and monitor both iron deficiency anemia (not enough iron) and iron overload (too much iron), which can impact energy levels and overall health.
Process
- A blood sample is taken from a vein from one’s arm.
- The test is best done in the morning, after an overnight fast.
- You may need to stop taking iron supplements 24 hours before the test.
When to Get tested
Get tested if you are feeling fatigue, weakness, dizziness, or are pale. It is also advisable for individuals who have a history of chronic blood loss, suspected iron overload, or who are on an iron therapy.
Sample Type
A very small (about 4 mL) blood sample will be taken for this test.
Test Preparation
Fast at least for 8–12 hours and avoid iron supplements for at least 24 hours before the test.
Understanding Your Results
Low serum iron and ferritin and high TIBC will often indicate an iron deficiency. High iron and ferritin and low TIBC will indicate overload. Always speak with your doctor to properly interpret any of the results before diagnosing or managing a medical condition.
