This test is a very sensitive blood test that calculates the specific quantity of hepatitis C virus (HCV) RNA in the blood stream. It quantifies the virus using the real-time PCR technology to (1) confirm the presence of an active HCV infection, (2) determine the amount of virus present, and (3) make treatment decisions; it can also be used to evaluate antiviral therapy and to ensure that the virus does not occur again after treatment.
Process
- A blood sample collected from a vein (usually from the arm).
- The blood sample is processed in a lab where the HCV RNA is extracted and measured.
- The real-time PCR technology is used to quantify the virus in IU/mL.
When to Get Tested
Testing is recommended for patients diagnosed with hepatitis C, patients starting antiviral therapy or who are already on antiviral therapy, and patients who are at risk of hepatitis C with a history of IV drug use, blood transfusion in 1991 and earlier, and body piercings. It will help to monitor progress in treatment and whether or not they have been cured.

Understanding Your Results
Higher viral load results may suggest an active infection and be useful in directing treatment. If levels of virus are undetectable or decreasing throughout therapy, one can conclude that treatment is effective. If levels of the virus do not become undetectable or are increasing, then one may need to utilize a different approach.
