The Hepatitis C Antibody test is a straightforward blood test that checks for any past exposure to the hepatitis C virus, or HCV. The test looks for antibodies that your body makes to fight against it. This is an important test to assess who may have hepatitis C, whether they have symptoms or not. Testing positively for this virus allows for follow—up, treatment, and prevention of liver damage and further transmission of the virus.
Process

When to Get Tested
A test should be done on anyone with risks of having, or has had hepatitis C including, a history of past intravenous drug use, received blood transfusion prior to 1992, employment in a medical setting, unexplained liver problems, etc. Testing for antibodies is also warranted for anyone who may have had contact with infected blood, and those who have higher risk age groups.

Understanding Your Results
A negative result means "no antibodies were detected," which means you have not been exposed in the past. A positive result means you have been exposed in the past or are currently exposed and you will need to follow up with a HCV RNA test to confirm active infection.
