The Hemogram Test, or Complete Blood Count (CBC), is a fundamental blood test that evaluates the amounts and characteristics of the three types of blood cells - red cells, white cells, and platelets. CBC is recommended if doctors suspect you might have an infection, anemia, inflammation, an immune system disorder or even blood cancers.
Process
- Our provider will use sterile equipment to prick a vein and collect a small sample of the blood.
- When blood tests are received at a laboratory, they can analyse using very unique automated machines.
When to get tested
You can have a Hemogram or CBC when you have symptoms like weakness or fatigue, fever, frequent infections, or unexplained bruising. You also often have this test when you are having a routine checkup with a provider, and even on occasion if you are being treated for a condition where some drugs affect blood cells (e.g., chemotherapy).
Sample Type
You will be giving approximately 2–5 mL for a standard blood test from your vein in your arm.
Test Preparation
No fasting or any special preparation is required. Let your doctor know about any medicines or supplements you are taking.
Understanding Your Results
The test provides your blood cell counts and compares them to normal ranges for blood cells. Abnormal results may suggest an infection, anemia or another condition, and your doctor will discuss additional tests if necessary or treatment options.
