The H1N1 (Swine Flu) Qualitative Real-Time PCR Test is a laboratory test that detects the H1N1 influenza virus' RNA. This test may help diagnose an active infection early, even before symptoms begin to fully develop. Early identification of the H1N1 influenza virus is necessary for the early initiation of any treatment, limiting the spread of the infection, or protecting other individuals particularly vulnerable to bad outcomes from H1N1 (e.g., the elderly, children, pregnant women, or individuals with compromised immune systems).
Process
- A swab is inserted into the nose or throat to collect a sample.
- The lab extracts RNA from the sample so the virus can be detected.
- Real-time PCR will look for specific genetic markers of the H1N1 virus.

Test Preparation

Understanding Your Results
A positive result indicates that the patient is infected with H1N1 and therefore requires treatment and isolation. A negative result indicates that the patient does not have an infection - however if testing was done too early or symptoms persist re-testing may be needed.
