Pregnancy glucose tolerance testing (GTT) is a simple yet important test to determine if gestational diabetes is present; this is a temporary increase in blood glucose levels that can occur while pregnant. The GTT is typically done between 24-28 weeks of gestation. This test helps to facilitate early diagnosis and management of any blood glucose issues while ensuring the health of the baby to prevent potential complications.
Process
- Initially, a fasting blood specimen will be taken.
- You will be instructed to drink a sweet liquid of 75g of glucose.
- You will have additional blood samples drawn at one hour and two hours to assess your sugar levels.
When To Get Tested
It is recommended that all pregnant women receive this test at 24-28 weeks. However, if you have a higher-risk profile, i.e., obesity, previous PCOS pregnancy, advanced maternal age, or family history of diabetes, you may be tested before 24 weeks.

Blood samples will be taken from a vein.
Test Preparation
Fasting for 8–14 hours before your test is advised. Do not consume caffeine or smoke during the fasting time or prior to the test. Avoid running or strenuous activity before or during the test.
Understanding Your Results
If one or more values are above the normal range, you are diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Depending on the results, either lifestyle factors will be addressed, or medical therapy is required to ensure a healthy pregnancy.
