The Glucose Challenge Test (GCT) is a simple screening test performed during pregnancy that does not require fasting. The test is used to look for signs of gestational diabetes, a condition marked by rising glucose levels during pregnancy, due to hormonal changes. It is important to find this earlier than later, as uncontrolled gestational diabetes may cause complications such as macrosomia (baby is large at birth), increased risk of preterm delivery, and/or delivery of a baby with preeclampsia.
Process
- Drink a sweet solution containing 50 grams of glucose.
- Wait 1 hour without consuming any food or drink.
- A blood sample is then taken to measure glucose levels.
When To Get Tested
Most women will be screened at 24 to 28 weeks of pregnancy. Women who are at risk (e.g., obesity, family history of diabetes, prior gestational diabetes, or over the age of 35) may be tested earlier in pregnancy.
Sample Type
A single blood sample is taken from the vein of the arm, one hour after the glucose solution is consumed.
Test Preparation
Fasting is not necessary for the test. Avoid eating sugary foods or drinks the day of the test and let the doctor know about any medications you take.
Understanding Your Results
Below 130-140 mg/dL is a normal result. If 130 mg/dL or greater then more testing is warranted with the three hour OGTT to be sure if you have gestational diabetes.
