The Gram Stain Test is a rapid and useful laboratory test to identify and classify pathogenic organisms present from body fluids collected from the body such as sputum, urine or blood. It represents whether an infection exists and if the offending bacteria is Gram-positive (purple) or Gram-negative (pink/red). The rapid identification of the bacteria will allow a professional to quickly find out the possible effective treatment protocols while waiting for full culture results.
Process
- A sample is spread on a glass slide and stained with special dyes.
- The stain colors bacteria based on their type—purple for Gram-positive, pink for Gram-negative.
- The technician examines the slide under a microscope to identify bacteria type and shape.
When To Get Tested
When there is a suspected infection in an organism doctors will request the gram test commonly when they suspect infection is based on the lungs, urinary tract, wounds or blood. A gram stain test is useful in the case of a serious infection or in any infection with an unclear diagnosis whereby treatment can be established quickly.
Sample Type
There may be different sample requirements depending on where the specific infection lies: sputum, urine, blood, swab from wound or cerebrospinal fluid.
Test Preparation
You do not need to prepare extensively for this test. For sputum (your spit) or urine, follow the clean collection instruction. If you were on an antibiotic recently, please notify your doctor.
Understanding Your Results
If bacteria are observed, they will be classified by their respective color and shape to help begin early treatment. If there is no bacteria, a follow-up culture may be required to confirm a bacterial infection.
