The Glucose, Body Fluid Test assesses glucose (blood sugar) levels in fluids obtained from the brain (CSF), lungs (pleural fluid), abdomen (peritoneal fluid), or joints (synovial fluid). The test is used to help the doctor identify serious problems such as infection, inflammation, or cancer. In the case of infection and/or inflammation, harmful cells and/or bacteria may utilize much or most of the glucose, resulting in lower glucose levels in the fluid. If glucose levels are detected and identified, timely and appropriate treatment is started.
Process
- A sample is obtained from the affected body part using a sterile needle procedure.
- A sample is then quickly sent to the lab for glucose testing.
- Blood glucose levels may also be tested to compare levels.
When To Get Tested
This test is indicated if you have symptoms such as fever, neck stiffness, chest pain, or swelling in your abdomen or joint pain — especially if there is suspicion of infection, inflammation, or increased fluid levels.
Sample Type
A sterile fluid sample is taken from the body cavity of interest (i.e. CSF, pleural, peritoneal, or synovial fluid).
Test Preparation
The glucose test requires no special preparation, but some other tests may require fasting or have some special instruction.
Understanding Your Results
If the glucose level in body fluid is much lower than the blood glucose level it could indicate infection, cancer, or inflammation. Your doctor will use this result with other information to make further decisions.
