This test is a longer version of an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), in that it looks at how long it takes your body to handle sugar—2.5 hours after ingesting a glucose solution. It helps find problems related to how your body processes sugar—whether it is prediabetes, diabetes, or just a delay in the clearing of glucose. Occasionally the blood sugar takes longer to return to a normal range, and this test provides a better picture of how your body processes glucose. This is especially helpful in borderline cases where tests at 2 hours are not conclusive.
Process
- Fast for 8-12 hours prior to the test.
- Drink 75 grams of glucose after your baseline blood sample is taken.
- A second blood sample is taken 2.5 hours after ingesting glucose.
When to Get Tested
This test may be collected if previous glucose tests were borderline or if there is a need to monitor your glucose metabolism in more detail. It can also be collected in certain situations like during pregnancy and for metabolic assessments.
Sample Type
A blood sample will be provided from a vein at fasting and 2.5 hours after glucose ingestion.
Test Preparation
Do not eat or drink (other than water) for 8-12 hours prior to the test. Talk to your physician about any medications you may need to take.
Understanding Your Results
If your blood sugar is still high after 2.5 hours, this may mean you have impaired glucose tolerance or diabetes. Your physician will go over your results and explain what it means, and whether any further test or lifestyle changes are needed.
