The 100g Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT), 2-Hour, is a test used mainly during pregnancy to help understand how well one’s body processes sugar. The OGTT can help determine whether one is at risk for gestational diabetes that could affect the health of the mother and the health of the baby. The tests measure blood sugar levels at different intervals after drinking the sugary solution to determine how well blood sugar is controlled after one has glucose in the body.
Process
- The procedure involves fasting overnight for 8-12 hours before the test is performed
- After this a blood sample taken before drinking a 100g glucose solution.
- You will then have blood samples taken at 1, 2 and 3 hours after drinking the glucose solution.
When To Get Tested
Typically between the 24 – 28 weeks of your pregnancy, or if your screening test shows elevated sugar levels, or you have any risk factors for gestational diabetes such as obesity, family history of diabetes (Type 1, Type 2 or gestational), or you previously had gestational diabetes.
Sample Type
Blood samples require taking blood from the vein at fasting and at 1, 2, and 3 hours after glucose intake.
Test Preparation
Fast for 8–12 hours prior to the test, and drink only water. Avoid smoking, caffeine, and heavy exercise on the day of the test.
Understanding Your Results
If two of the blood sugar readings are above the normal limits, then you are diagnosed with gestational diabetes. The doctor will explain the results to you, and provide treatment or lifestyle recommendations to ensure that you and your baby stay healthy.
