The 1 hour glucose test is actually part of a 3 hour Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) to diagnose gestational diabetes in pregnancy. The test measures how well one’s body is able to handle sugars after drinking a 100 gram glucose drink. The test is important because gestational diabetes can cause complications during pregnancy if left unmonitored. If the high levels of blood sugar are found early, your doctor will be able to provide the appropriate care plan needed for you to have a healthy pregnancy and baby.
Process
- You will need to fast for 8-12hrs. before the test.
- A blood sample is collected before and again at 1, 2, and 3 hrs after consuming the glucose solution.
- The 1-hour blood sample helps evaluate glucose tolerance.
When to Get Tested
This test is typically performed between 24-28 weeks of a pregnancy, and would always be done if your initial glucose screening test was above the cut-off. You may be tested earlier if you have other risk factors for diabetes such as obesity or a history of gestational diabetes.
